This brand subversion T-shirt plays on the well known Tayto Crisps trademark and is a nod towards their well thought out advertising campaigns which have included "3 out of every 4 people prefer tayto, but there's always one". and their electoral campaign which touched on gay marriage in a very Irish way. (See below for images)

Interestingly in 2008 they also ran an advertising campaign to find Mr. Tayto a wife. He's a potatoe who has been a batchelor all his life and dresses in very bright and garish clothes, he doesn't need a wife, he just needs to have a very honest conversation with his Mammy.

  Tayto's Morally Sound Ad Campaign:

Tayto Ad Gay

There was an interesting response to this advertising campaign run in Ireland in 2007 at the same time as the government electoral campaign, the following extract from angrypotato.ie sums up the surrounding issues nicely:

I received 27 emails about this today RE: the gay marriage posters.

I rang Tayto Ireland, to get their view on this. The entire campaign is tongue in cheek, and really should not be perceived in any other light.

It's actually about Gay Byrne and Kathleen thing, its a very clever play on words. However in saying that a few people were annoyed over it.

I told Tayto this, and it was never their intention, in effect they are highlighting an issue, that is now an election issue also, and in fairness one could say that they are highlighting the ridiculousness that we don't recognise gay marriage in this country. It is a genius advertising campaign with no malice.

Homosexual acts were illegal in Ireland up until the summer of 1993. The Offences against the Person Act lifted the ban, and declared the age of consent to be 17, the same as that for acts between heterosexuals.
